Christy Dorman, yoga & pilates instructor

We all seek harmony and connection, in the world, in our communities, in our families..but first we must learn to cultivate in ourselves starting with our bodies. Both Yoga and Pilates are tools for this transformation to connection.

I “discovered” yoga after a career as a dancer and dance teacher. For me, dancing was a spiritual expression, a way that I connected to myself, to others, and ultimately with the divine. In yoga we learn to understand and connect with ourselves through the body, breath and the space around us. Pilates develops the foundation for healthy happy bodies and fluid movement through a strong center (or “core”), increased flexibility and connection of breath, body and movement.

My Teacher’s Training was with Jane Erskine of Erskine Fitness in Seattle and with Gail Gustafson, CPI and CMA. I started offering Pilates classes and private lessons on Bainbridge Island in 1995 with a single Studio Reformer.

I have been practicing and teaching yoga for over 20 years. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher (the RYT certification). This means that I completed the Yoga Alliance teacher training program after completing a 200 hour Teacher’s Training course at at Samadhi Yoga in Seattle.

My most influential teachers have been Kathleen Hunt of Samadhi Yoga and Felicity Green.  Other people have provided me with opportunities to practice and grow as a teacher and student of yoga. These include Eiric Orvid, Steve Davis, Carol Wallace, Shiva Rhea, Judith Lassater, Donald Moyer, Jenn Breen and others.

I have been a performer and dancer since the age of 15 and have a minor in Dance Education along with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. The choreographers who guided, challenged and inspired me include Jeff Bickford, Pam Schick, Mark Morris and Gina Gibney.  I was active in the Seattle dance-performance community from 1982 – 1995.

Laban-Baretnieff Movement

I am a Certified Movement Analyst (CMA), an international post baccalaureate degree (with more than 500 hours of study) given by Laban-Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies in New York City. I have applied this method in physical therapy and rehab as well as in performance coaching. The Laban Movement system informs all of my teaching and has helped me develop a keen eye for movement and a language to speak about movement to my students.

I am thankful to all my teachers for their wisdom and inspiration.

I am deeply grateful for my family, my husband Mike, daughter Sophie and awesome Aussie, Wyatt for their continued support and love.

Finding harmony and connection creates happiness!
